What is Barramundi?

Barramundi is a fish that is native to Australia. It has a mild flavor, is low in calories, and is loaded with heart-healthy fats. Since it has a mild flavor, I have found it to be quite kid-friendly, and it doesn’t leave a strong fish odor after being cooked. It works really well in most recipes, is easy to cook, and is packed with protein. Plus, it is a hardy fish that can be farmed sustain-ably, without any hormones, chemicals, or antibiotics. It is a mid-priced option at our local BJs Wholesale Club, where I buy it, which makes it great for feeding our large family.

Fried Fish

Let me be clear about one thing right from the start, fried fish will never be healthy. This is definitely a healthier option, but fried food is still fried food. Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, this fish is so good. The batter itself can be changed if you want to change up the flavor. Add a little chili powder and paprika to make it a bit spicy, or even a few drops of hot sauce. You could add a little lime juice or a little garlic powder. I kept the batter pretty neutral flavored on purpose because it keeps the recipe a bit more kid-friendly.

I chose coconut oil to fry the fish in because it’s light, healthy and has a medium smoke point. Next time, however, I think I will use avocado oil.
