Why Go Screen-free?
Let me start this entire post by saying that I am not against screen-time. In my house, we limit the amount of time that our kids spend staring at screens, but there are tons of times where I give them the go-ahead to watch television or use the tablets or computers. There are a ton of benefits to children using technology, which you can read about here. However, there are also benefits to limiting the amount of screen-time that children have as well. Limiting the amount of screen-time children have can help them be more physically active, help children be more present to the world around them, sleep better, be more connected to those around them, and have better language skills. Research also suggests that too much screen time can negatively affect children’s brains. So, I think it’s important for children to have some screen-free gifts.

Screen-free Gifts for Creating
Kids seem to love slime these days, and they have a slime kit for just about everyone.
Bath bomb kits are on the wish list in my house this year!
Craft kits– They have craft kits for everything: weaving, crocheting, making jewelry, learning to sew, making snow globes, and more!
We also love giving and getting colored pencils, coloring books, stencils, paints, markers, and all things art-related.
Screen-free Gifts for Learning
Books! Books! And more books! Seriously, we love books in our house, and there are so many different books about so many different subjects, it’s an easy way to give a gift that peaks children’s interests.
I am also a huge fan of STEM toys. Last year, our oldest received a Goldie Blox set where she learned about levers and built a dunk tank and a K’nex kit where she learned about gears and built a Ferris wheel.
Screen-free Gifts for Doing
This might be my favorite thing to give. You can give lessons, gift certificates to local theme parks or amusement activities. My daughters got leotards for their birthdays this year from their grandparents to go with the gymnastics lessons that we gave them. We are giving our nephew a gift certificate to the local trampoline park, and last year we gave my parents tickets to join us at a local theme park for the day. We had so much fun being there together as a family, and those memories will last a lifetime.
